In this scheme, pupils will investigate conflicts involving British armed forces since 1945. They will also study memorials from different periods and localities in order to design their own memorial for the post-1945 conflict they have researched and wish to commemorate.

The aim is for pupils to gain an overview of conflicts which British armed forces have been involved
in since 1945. Students will conduct independent enquiry and reach their own conclusions about the ‘significance’ of those events.

This unit will also develop their understanding of how memorials evolve, the variety of forms that
they can take and how they can be used to portray very powerful messages about the past and thus further shape present day interpretations.

Memorials and the way that they represent past events are shaped by ‘the politics of the present’. Memorials say as much about the beliefs and values of the people who commissioned and designed them as they do about the event they commemorate. In this sense memorials do not symbolise
history. Instead, they symbolise the relationship that the people who created them have with that history.

This enquiry is focussed on the way memorials represent the past, how they reflect the values of the society that builds them and how they shape subsequent interpretations of the events they commemorate.

A key aspect of the enquiry is for pupils to participate in meaningful inter-disciplinary work, in particular between History and Design Technology as the main focus. For History teaching, the focus is on historical enquiry, significance and interpretations. For DT teaching, the focus is on cultural understanding, design and creativity.

Key questions:

• Where, when and why have the British Armed Forces served in conflicts overseas?
• Where, how and why have conflicts been remembered?
• How do we find out about a particular conflict?
• How do we create a memorial for a particular conflict?
• Why should our memorial be built?
• To what extent is the National Memorial Arboretum’s vision different from your own?
