Yangtze 1949
On 20th April 1949 during the Chinese civil war between Communist and Nationalist forces, HMS Amethyst was sailing along the Yangtze river from Shanghai to Nanjing to guard the British Embassay in Nanjing. The ship came under attack from Chinese Communist shore batteries and was grounded with the loss of forty-six crew.

In July 1949, the vessel was successfully refloated and, under cover of darkness, managed to escape down the river to the
open sea.
