Conflict in Eritrea and Ethiopia 2000-
From 1961 to 1991 rebels in Eritrea, a former Northern province of
the African state of Ethiopia, fought for independence.
In 1993, Eritrea separated peacefully from Ethiopia and became an independent state.
Between 1998 and 2000, prompted by border disputes and trade disagreements, Eritrea and Ethiopia fought a bitter war with high
casualties on both sides.
In 2000, the United Nations deployed a peace-keeping force from sixty countries which included British participation.
